Kaiju is a native macOS app that records your gameplay continuously in the background. When something worth keeping happens, one keystroke saves it as a clip — anything from the last thirty seconds to the last thirty minutes — then trim, compress and share it without leaving the app.

Kaiju keeps a rolling buffer of up to thirty minutes while you play. Press the hotkey and it writes the moment you just missed — no recording to remember to start, no lost round.

Editing

Every clip you own, one trim away from done.

The editor opens on your whole library — not just the newest clip. Pick anything, drag the handles, export. Nothing renders in the background, nothing to learn.

Who makes this

Built by an independent developer.

Kaiju is a one-person project, written in Swift for macOS. That means decisions are quick, bug reports get read by the person who can fix them, and the app stays small on purpose — no telemetry, no upsells, no feature added because a roadmap demanded it.

Development happens in public. The release history, known issues and what is being worked on next are all on GitHub, and the Discord is where most of it gets discussed.

What is Kaiju?+

A native macOS app for instant-replay clip capture. It records your game continuously, saves up to the last thirty minutes on a hotkey, and gives you a library, a simple editor and size-aware export in the same window.

Which Macs are supported?+

Apple Silicon Macs on macOS 14 or later. Capture and export both run on the hardware media engine, so the replay buffer costs very little while you play.

Will Kaiju stay free?+

It is free during early access. After that there will be a paid version, and the intention is to keep it under $5 as a one-time purchase. Nothing is locked behind a subscription.

Can it compress a clip to a specific size?+

Yes. Choose a destination profile or type a target, and Kaiju exports a file that lands just under it at the best quality that fits.

Can I record my microphone?+

Game audio and microphone are captured with independent levels, so you can set the balance once and every clip records that way.

macOS says it cannot verify the app. Now what?+

Right-click Kaiju in Applications and choose Open the first time, or allow it under System Settings → Privacy & Security. Notarisation is in progress for a later early-access build.
